Everything (almost) you ought to know about installing System update 2.0 on a localized MacOS
Prolog As we have been forced to use earlier US beta versions of the System update 2.0 to evaluate the functions we have also learned some about making this thing work on a Swedish system.
We have received various information about when the translated updater is supposed to be released and judging from earlier updates we could be facing a long wait. Nevertheless there are probably some non-US users who could face an even longer wait than the users in Sweden.
Why would anybody do this fearful transformation of a version US to a localized hybrid version? We belive that if you are struggling with Open Transport 1.08 or repeatedly are running in to error 11, that would be reason enough. Remember that this is not work for any one but knowledgeable users, system advisors etc, used to deal with complex problems and therefore likely to survive the transition.
Some of the things we do are quite unorthodox and we concentrate on a machine for real production. We always exclude Apple software that we feel hurt more than gain and we do exclude cosmetic things like Aaron. Our normal judgement is that any extension should have a value in production, and if a minor problem is expected from the extension, there has to be a clear gain.
We feel no need to use or even test GX print or PowerTalk as none of our customers use it or ever has requested it.
We have mainly worked with a couple of 9500, some of them very heavily equipped. We have also done some universal upgrades. The results we have seen could probably basically be translated to any other machine with reservation for the 68k version of Open Transport wich we yet have to test. We have still not tested the 7.5.3 on our PowerBook 500 PPC, but we soon will.
Does it work?
Yes, QuarkXpress (3.3.2r2) language protection scheme does not detect the change so a Swedish QXP works fine on the hybrid system. All international keyboards [tangentbord] are kept and all time and date formats are there!Our systems are thoroughly tested in real production environment. We are often introduced to new customers where a normal crash frequency is several times a day. In very intensive work with a lot of parallel processes we accept one (1) non-fatal crash per week, everything else is regarded as a failure.
Remember that this (except where otherwise pointed out) is based on the Swedish localization and that deviations will exist as a result of variations in the localizing method used in different countries.
What do I need?
A method to install a fresh 7.5x from diskettes or CD-ROM, space enough to have multiple system folders on the hard disk and ResEdit 1.1.3 or (the better choice) Resorcerer 1.2.5.We use _f as identification of folders and [for Swedish].
Please make a backup of your hard disk before diving in to this project. Even without trying this, you should of course have one or several backups. Enough said.
Install 7.5.3
Begin with a safety precaution following the backup; test that your startup diskette or CD-ROM really works as a alternative startup device so that you have a fallback if things go wrong. Also test and confirm that your hard disk has a good architecture with Apple Disk First Aid or better; Norton Disk Doctor 3.2.1. Check that your hard disk drive is SCSI manager 4.3.1 savvy, if not, reformat or upgrade the SCSI-driver.After booting with your normal system configured with as few extensions as possible (keep a nice system to work with and CD-ROM drives) start to install a new parallel localized system 7.5 on your hard disk (option-shift-k)[alternativ-skift-k]. Do a clean install of 7.5.2 for the 9500. Restart the system and start with shift held down to skip extensions.
We earlier placed the System 7.5 Update 2.0 folder on the disk and now it is time to do an Easy Install. Restart when finished and hold down shift to skip extensions.
After this the new system folder is blessed and as we don't want this to happen yet, we de-bless it by putting the Finder in a folder called 'Finderf'. It is very important to open and close the original system folder after this...
I need;

You will notice that the system has duplicates of Extensions_f, Control Panel_f etc. in localized format. We will take care of that after making some room on the hard disk.
Reduce 7.5.3 from 21MB to 15MB and reduce OS RAM by 800KB

Move files located in Preferences _f to [Programinställningar] or the other way depending on type of localization.Cache would be back to minimum. We would adjust it to somewhere between 256KB to 4MB
Activate virtual memory and adjust it to be +1MB or, even better, install RamDoubler 1.6.2

If you use Apple Extensions Manager, the basic system 7.5 set-up is wrong.There is a very good documentation on Open Transport in Acrobat format called Open Transport 1.1 Read Me.
Localizing the mixed system
From here, there are two different ways to go; either adjust the system so that the Extensions_f [Tillägg_f] folders etc. works with US name or choose the localized name scheme.The US version has the drawback that if you have patched Now Startup Manager to work localized you will be in trouble and you will be forced to change all these folders names when upgrading several machines.
The localized system folder will force you to trick Open Transport and could raise problems in the future, but until then, hopefully, you have got the genuine translated system.
Start the localizing with a duplication of the new System Folder_f. This is to be able to recover if something goes wrong.
US version
Open up the System 7.5.2 Update System file with your resource editor and find the resource of type fld#. Copy this from System 7.5.2 Update to the System file.Localized version
Reverse the copy and paste for the US version. You also have to fool Open Transport a bit by (Finder) copying all six components, Open Tpt AppleTalk Library, Open Tpt Internet Library, Open Transport Library, OpenTptAppleTalkLib, OpenTptInternetLib and OpenTransportLib to the US version of Extensions_f. The Open Transport will reside in two places.Finally make a backup copy of the new system files so that you don't have to start all over in case of a disaster.
Starting on the new hybrid system
Go to your old system file and split System and Finder as you did with the new System Folder. You can se that the system icon (in icon view) disappears from both the System Folder itself and from the Extensions_f [Tillägg_f] folders etc. Return to the New System Folder and move Finder from the Finder to the New System Folder. Check that you get a System icon on the New System Folder and restart.After this it is your job to put back those favourite extensions that you REALLY NEED.
Small adjustments and problems
From time to time it almost seems as if Open Transport has to be jump-started; Using chooser, AppleTalk (control panel) and Network Software Selector alternatively and booting would wake Open Transport from the big sleep.RamDoubler 1.6.1 will complain after the update; just install RamDoubler again.
Under some circumstances, PrintMonitor [Utskriftskontroll] is not able to start and the result is that it is impossible to print. Put an alias of it in a nice place and start it manually.
Timbuktu Pro 2.0.1 delivers strange dialogues if the system has either lost the network (Open Transport) or the name has yet to be typed in Sharing Set-up [Fildelning]. Related subject; How to install ARA 2.0.1 on System Update 2.0.
Desktop Printing 1.0.3
Print monitor 7.1.2 [Bakgrundsutskrift] or Desktop Printing 1.0.3 [Skrivbordsskrivare] works fine except in one specific case. If you have a localized Desktop Printing you must change to a international version or the 'Background Printing' option in the Chooser will be greyed out.
Real problems (for some people)
No Sound! Nope, no sound, sorry. The same kind of behaviour as for 7.5.2 running on a 9500 with an Enabler from a 7200 to fix the cache problem before Speed Doubler was born. This is now cured.
Small things that we found
None of the earlier beta seeds or the GM System 2.0 Update will cooperate with After Dark. So why use After Dark? It was the only tool available to control Energy Save compliant monitor except Energy saver 1.1 which was no gem.We did build a Universal (pure US) system containing EVERYTHING (350 items, 38MB). That system works fine striped down as a startup on an emergency hard disk or similar. But any test to make it work even striped down to zero with Open Transport only, resulted in 100% failure. Some unfinished work is left to be fixed by Apple.
The new Energy Saver does not work too well, at least not in our hybrid-system. It does admit processor rest on 9500 but it won't sleep except when forced by the menu. The Philips Brilliance 21A spends the lonely nights beeping as it turns on and off all the time but no visible screen comes on. We are now testing the old version of Energy Saver.
The Radius Dynamic Desktop PCI 1.1.1 or the Radius Thunder video card did lose the track of resolution in one specific machine, no big deal.
All the small problems we have had have been very consistent in all beta versions, even in the beta of 7.5.3 that comes as one complete system installer (no update).
Other Localizations
The printer drive is very easy to localize to the right paper formats etc. Use the great little program Printer Defaults 1.43 or later (free ware).
To localize the Finder and SystemEpilogue Some thoughts that did struck us
Apple should not have let them self down to translate the inner structure of the system folder as little as Microsoft should have translated the BASIC looking macro language in Excel to Swedish. Trivial Pursuit; OM, ICKE, STÄDA, OCH, ÄRREF! >JASSÅ< Uuummphh!?!Why does not Apple license PPP 2.5 and include it in the installation procedure? I know a lot of people who would take Macintosh for a complete Internet-Machine, not.
As everyone knows, the GM of System 7.5.2 Update was ready a week before March 11. How come distribution can't be synchronised all over the world? The serie of beta releases should have been enough to prepare Apple for a localized version on the release day.
